My Favorite Bible Verse

August 8, 2018Rita

We all have a bible verse that we just love. There may be a reason behind it or maybe it just struck a chord with you the first time you heard it. I have one as well and I will share it with you in a moment. First I want to share why it is my favorite.

I have eidetic memory when it comes to things I read. I can tell you word for word the very first book I ever read on my own. However for some reason it doesn’t work with the bible. I have no idea why it doesn’t seem to work for the bible. It certainly would help me if it did. Maybe it is the way it is written.

Anyway, when I was younger we had to memorize a different bible verse each week and each week I failed at it. Again I don’t know why but for an OCD overachiever like me it was like being told you were one second away from the Noble Peace Prize and you didn’t get it. I would go home in tears each Sunday.

Then we came to Acts and I struggled like always at first. The week we had to learn Acts 2:38 something inside me just clicked. I didn’t have to look at that verse but once and I haven’t forgotten it to this day.

And Peter said to them, “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

It is the only bible verse that I know by heart. I still have lots of trouble memorizing verses but now days I don’t bother doing it too much. In fact, I don’t make my class do that either.  Instead I have them each month tell me what their favorite verse was. It doesn’t matter if they don’t get it perfect, as long as they get the idea of it.

    I used to be in the Bible Bowl program at my church and memorized several books including matthew, revelation, 1 & 2 Judges…now I can’t remember any of it. I do, however, remember the verses that were songs we sang as part of worship!

    I wanted to come see what your favorite was. I think thats a great idea to have your class recite their favorite instead of memorizing one. 🙂

    That is a very special verse and I love it too! My favorite verses are these three because they go together so well and I have been healed by quoting them aloud and meditating on them!! God is good!!

    1 Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.
    2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:
    3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;
    Psalm 103: 1-3 KJV Bible

    I love your favorite verse as well and I actually have three, because they go together so well;

    1 Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.
    2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:
    3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; Psalm 103: 1-3 KJV

    I have always liked the book of Ruth, a short one, but one that is overlooked. I love the simplicity and love in that book. I particularly like Ruth 1:16. Love an devotion.
